Past Member The Bees' (Andy) Review: I recently came into the possession of the deck-building card game Adventure Mart. I’ll admit I was only interested because of the box art, which features cute, stylized animals in blocky crayon-style inking. I’m a sucker for good box art, I’ll say it.
In Adventure Mart, 2-4 players play as Managers of their own Adventure Mart in a busy, unnamed city chock-full of adventurers looking for gear and trinkets. Through clever manipulations of Fixtures, Stock, and Staff, you must sell gear to the passing Adventurers in the queue. The player with the most Net Worth at the end of your five-day review wins!
I’m not very fond of deck-builders, but Adventure Mart has kept me playing because of its simple ruleset, fun gameplay, and variability. The five variable components in the game are your Stock, Fixtures, Staff, Adventurers, and the Daily Bulletins. The game’s recommended minimum age range starts at 10 years old, so it doesn’t bog you down with large amounts of minute gameplay. Turns are simple, giving everyone one action out of the three possible, and then the turn is passed to the next player. The art is super cute and makes every card fun to have, and the scoring system is straightforward. My only issue is the game can be unclear on when card abilities can be activated.
Couple that in with some incredible design choices in terms of packaging, card organization, this game is probably the only time I’ve ever had fun with capitalism.
